Launch of Starlink on August 9, 2022

Heads up! SpaceX begins its Starlink launches for the month with a batch of 53 satellites at 22:57 UTC (6:57 p.m. EDT) on August 9, 2022. Starlink Group 4-26 will ascend atop a Falcon 9 rocket. The time and the date are an appointment for the launch; so far, and the weather was warm and sunny yesterday at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where the satellites are waiting to depart. This is SpaceX’s 100th orbital launch attempt of the year. Wow!

Growing numbers amid controversy

Love ’em or hate ’em, the Starlink satellites are SpaceX’s constellation of internet communications satellites. They provide high-speed Internet service around the world, primarily in locations where ground-based Internet is unreliable, unavailable, or expensive. The private company is well known for launching consecutive batches, several times a month, regularly launching 60 satellites at once. As of this writing, approximately 2,700 are currently in orbit and will possibly grow to as many as 30,000 eventually.

Most found it exciting to see the first Starlink satellites traveling together across the night sky. But others have been launched, and even more. And astronomers began to worry.

Starlinks are brilliant. Astronomers say they photobomb astronomical images. They have the potential to interfere with the professional astronomical observations that have brought us our modern view of the cosmos. And while SpaceX has tried to fix the problem, they’re falling short of what astronomers say is acceptable.

Meanwhile …

South Korea is on its way to the moon. SpaceX helped the country by using a Falcon 9 rocket to launch the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO), also known as Danuri, August 4. It’s a milestone for South Korea, being the country’s first-ever deep-space mission, and paves the way for more ambitious launch efforts down the road. Mission officials from the Korea Aerospace Research Institute said in a statement that the KPLO…

… will be the first step to ensure and verify [South Korea’s] space exploration capability.

The main purpose of the KPLO mission is a demonstration, but will also use its six scientific instruments for research in lunar orbit. It is expected to land on the moon and establish orbit by mid-December 2022, NASA said.

Conclusion: SpaceX has seven Starlink launches scheduled for August 2022. Watch the first one unfold at 6:57 p.m. EDT on August 9, 2022.
