Coconino County, Ariz. Calls on SpaceX for rural broadband trial

(TNS) – Coconino County partners with SpaceX to provide 45 rural homes with reliable high-speed internet access.

Earlier this month, the Elon Musk-founded aerospace manufacturer launched several dozen low-orbit satellites designed to provide high-speed internet.

This launch could be seen statewide and even the country.

According to a county press release, the effort to bring the internet to some homes in northern Arizona began in 2019 when Coconino County Supervisory Board vice chair Lena Fowler and director of the Coconino County information, Matt Fowler, both met with the company.

The county has secured agreements to use “SpaceX beta technology” to make the internet accessible to rural areas of Coconino County.

And Coconino County successfully became one of SpaceX’s first customers, buying and launching Starlink Internet in a 45-household trial on May 6.

“We know the critical need for reliable and quality Internet access in rural Coconino County. Our families and our workforce must be connected to compete in today’s market, advance their education and improve their quality of life. Coconino County, once again, is leading the way in providing Internet access through an innovative and resourceful partnership, ”Fowler said in a statement.
