NASA Sets Cover, Invites The Public To Join The Next Cargo Launch Virtually

WASHINGTON, May 26, 2021 / PRNewswire / – NASA’s commercial cargo provider SpaceX is targeting 1:29 p.m. EDT, Thursday June 3, to launch its 22nd Commercial Replenishment Services Mission to International space station. Take off will be from the agency’s Launch Complex 39A Kennedy Space Center in Florida. SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft will provide new solar panels to power future work aboard the orbiting laboratory, as well as new science investigations, supplies and equipment for the international crew. Live coverage will be broadcast on NASA television, the NASA app and the agency website, with pre-launch events starting Wednesday June 2.

Dragon’s pressurized capsule will carry a variety of research, including an experiment that could help develop better pharmaceuticals and therapies to treat kidney disease on Earth, a study on cotton root systems who could identify the varieties of plants that require less water and pesticides. The research will also include two surveys of model organisms: one will study bobtail squid examine the effects of spaceflight on the interactions between beneficial microbes and their animal hosts. The other will examine adaptation of tardigrades conditions in low earth orbit, which could advance the understanding of stressors affecting humans in space.

The mission will include technology demonstrations, including a portable ultrasound apparatus. Additionally, astronauts will test the effectiveness of robotic arms and remote-controlled space vehicles using virtual reality and haptics interfaces.

Dragon’s unpressurized chest section will deliver the first two of six new solar panels for deployment design based tested on the space station in 2017. A robotic arm will extract them and astronauts will install them on a series of spacewalks this summer.

Approximately 12 minutes after launch, Dragon will separate from the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket and begin a carefully choreographed series of thruster shots to reach the space station. Arrival at the space station is scheduled for Saturday June 5. Dragon will dock autonomously at the space-oriented port on the station Harmony module, with Expedition 65 Flight Engineers Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur of NASA surveillance operations.

The spacecraft is expected to spend more than a month attached to the space station before crashing into the Atlantic Ocean, returning with research and returning the cargo.
