NASA targets February for launch of first lunar rocket since Apollo mission


Nasa is now targeting February 2022 for the launch of its powerful Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.

Stacked with the agency’s Orion crew capsule, the SLS stands 100 meters tall and is currently located at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

SLS goes launch the next generation of deep space operations, including Artemis missions, on and around the moon.

It was originally planned to take off in November but has fallen behind.

NASA said in a statement on Friday as the integrated system enters the final stages of preparations for an upcoming unmanned flight test around the moon, including a series of integrated tests.

Her mission, known as Artemis I, will pave the way for a future crewed flight test, and NASA aims to send the first woman and first person of color to the moon in years to come.

“It’s hard to express what this milestone means, not only for us here at Exploration Ground Systems, but for all of the incredibly talented people who have worked so hard to help us get to this point,” Mike Bolger, Exploration Program Ground Systems director, said in a statement, “Our team has shown tremendous dedication in preparing for the launch of Artemis I. Although there is still work to be done for the launch, with ongoing integrated testing and a wet dress rehearsal, seeing the SLS fully stacked is certainly a reward for all of us. ”

Testing includes interface verification testing, program-specific engineering testing, end-to-end communication testing, countdown sequencing testing, and dress rehearsal testing.

According to Space.com, at a press conference on Friday, deputy associate administrator for exploration systems development at NASA headquarters, tom whitmeyer, told reporters that the stacked rocket and crew capsule would be deployed on Launch Pad 398 in late December for testing and western dress rehearsal testing in January before heading back for more crates followed by another move on the pad.

“Before heading to the mat for a wet suit, the teams will perform the first of a two-part test of the flight termination system inside the VAB. Once the systems have been checked, the 322-foot rocket top will return to the VAB for final inspections and checks, including the second part of the end-of-flight system test, before returning to the platform for launch. ” Artemis I mission operations would continue to perform additional launch simulations prior to launch.

The agency said it will set a specific launch date after a successful dress rehearsal.

SLS is powered by a central stage with four RS-25 liquid propellant Engines and thrusters paired with five solid rocket segments that produce millions of pounds of thrust.

NASA has already fired the main stage and its engines twice this year to make sure the rocket components were working – although the first hot-shot test in January ended early due to a problem with the hydraulic system.

Nasa finally finished the test firing of its lunar rocket engine in March.

The 1972 Apollo 17 mission was the last in which humans traveled to the moon.
