POTTSTOWN – Sometimes throwing a big party means finding the best space.
Organizers of the GoFourth celebrations believe they did just that last year when they moved the celebration to a downtown street fair after the iconic Independence Day parade.
And the folks bringing the Challenger Learning Center to the Pottstown campus of Montgomery County Community College believe they’ve found the best space in all of Pennsylvania for the center, which will provide immersive science learning opportunities for students and teachers across the region. through in-person space exploration simulations, team-based virtual “missions” and other hands-on classroom adventures.
It therefore stands to reason that the theme of this year’s 4th of July festivities reflects these discoveries. On Tuesday, it was announced that the theme would be “Space: Boldly going where no city has gone before.”
The GoFourth! Street Fest on Monday, July 4 will feature fantastic food, live music, a Kids Fun Zone and, of course, a free spectacular fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. in Memorial Park.
It will follow the Rotary Club of Pottstown’s annual parade on July 4 down the High Street from Adams Streets to York Streets, starting at 10:15 a.m. Street Fest will start at 11 a.m. and run until 5 p.m.
“Pottstown is truly ‘boldly going where no city has gone before’ in terms of finding innovative new developments, leveraging our riverfront and Memorial Park location, and hosting exceptional events centered on the community,” Amy Wolf, Co-Chair of Pottstown Go Fourth! said in a press release announcing the theme.
The day will provide the opportunity to stroll the High Street from Charlotte to the streets of York, enjoying live music, food from local restaurants and popular food trucks, Pottstown breweries and beer gardens, artisans and other vendors, nonprofit informational exhibits, and children’s activities.
Charlotte Street will be the Kids Fun Zone sponsored by ROG Orthodontics, complete with face painting; Games; and entertainment including the ever-popular Judy Tudy the Clown, a gutter regatta and living history presented by the County of Hartshorn-dale, including re-enactments, medieval history, dancing, costumes and combat.
More live entertainment sponsored by VideoRay, LLC will be featured at the Smith Family Plaza in the 100 Block of High Street. Bands on the bill include Brian Fitzy (sponsored by Gofus Memorials, Inc.), the Hannah Violet Trio, Hector Rosado y Orchestra and Modern Luxe – all to enjoy along with a Sly Fox Beer Garden and other food trucks. A number of High Street restaurants will also be open to customers.
Amy Francis, co-chair, noted that the downtown location was a success last year, in part because it helped recognize and drive traffic to Pottstown’s growing number of small businesses.
“Our Pottstown businesses have been so resilient and creative, and the downtown vibe just keeps getting better,” Francis said. “Street Fest and our other 4th of July activities will highlight the ongoing revitalization of Pottstown and allow families and visitors to the borough to celebrate our beautiful hometown.”
The Rotary Duck Race draw will take place at 3 p.m. on High and Hanover streets. This event raises funds for non-profit organizations in the vital region.
The fireworks pre-show party will begin at 5 p.m. at Memorial Park, 75 W. King St., with food trucks, a Sly Fox Beer Garden, inflatable “rides” for the kids and a DJ Q ball.
The pyrotechnics, presented by International Fireworks and sponsored by Precision Polymer Products, Inc., will begin at 9:30 p.m.
Parking will be available on the streets where available (please be mindful of our borough neighbours) and in the Borough of Pottstown lots at South Hanover Street near the train tracks, High and Evans Street lots, and the King Street lot between Hanover and Penn streets. Additionally, free parking will be available at the Montgomery County Community College South Hall parking lot, 101 College Drive. Premium fireworks parking passes will be available, but parking tickets are required; they will go on sale in mid-May at www.pottstowngofourth.com.
